La.Pi.S. # 72 : Tomato

button6

KBL
Kamatis, Bagoong at Lasona
Tomato, Fish Paste & Onions

The first time i heard about KBL is the abbreviation for a well known political party here in the Philippines.

But in Ilocos Region, KBL is also a well known dip. alam nyo naman ang pinoy, mahilig sa sawsawan and this is the Ilocano's favorite dip. Lasona is the Ilocano word for Onions. the Ilocos native onions are those smaller ones - about the size of cherry tomato - than the ordinary. some people call it small onions or shallots.

other peple prefer to use shrimp fry paste (bagoong alamang). they even add chili pepper too.

this is good if not the best dip for: green mangoes; grilled or fried fish or meat.

for this photo, we cant see the effect of the fish paste since its all ready at the bottom - sorry, i forgot to use a transparent bowl for this. i also added spring onions for added color and taste.

as i said last entry (LaPiS # 71 : Potato) i used this KBL to dip our daing na bangus. i tried to dip the potato fries and its good too :D

La.Pi.S # 70 : Strawberry

button6

Pink Midnight Snack

I'm laughing to myself. just imagine, a big guy like me likes this pink midnight snack or breakfast.

its colored pink due to it strawberry flavor. a yogurt drink with strawberry juice and a strawberry flavored butter.

hmmmm ????? i hope that one day there will be a pink coffee too =)) until then, lets have some pink power.

when the LaPiS theme 1st came, i noticed that Ms.Admin used my idea to use one ingredient as a theme ingredient (ala iron chef). i was definitely amazed and happy but i became worried for this theme. strawberries are not that abundant here in the Philippines - specially now that the farms and roads are ruined due to the last storm. yes, the grocery has canned, frozen, preserved, jams, jellies and flavored ones, thus i used this as an entry.

Have a great day ka-Lasang-Pinoy :D

Food Trip # 22 : my 1st Smorgasbord

AND AND button6

Open Breakfast
at Sunburst Fried Chicken

i am so Glad and super full to the brim when my GF's parents treated us to this food haven - a full course open buffet breakfast. yup my dear readers, an open breakfast and a complete one too. sorry if i did not took a photo of each dish but to give you an idea, here's my plate.

If memory serves me right they have : eggs (sunny side up; scrrabled; scrabled with ampalaya) ; breakfast ceareals (corn flakes & milk); pansit canton; chicken tocino; rice (steamed; garlic); extra chopped onion leaves and toasted minced garlic for the garlic rice; pancake and butter slices.

on the opposite table they have two vaccum flask(airpots) for hot water; sachets: of coffee; milo (hot choco); creamer. cups and saucers and a bowl of sugar. Pineapple Juice; Orange Juice; hmmmmmm, what did i missed? ahhhh, i am for sure wanna go there again.

if you asking "how much"? 120 pesos per person, cheap? at first not, but if you have the "appetite" for sure, its all worth it. as for me, its a steal, not only because its a treat but because, im so full and satisfied..pangga, balik tayo pls (my love, pls lets eat there again pls).

as of this date (oct 1, 2009 1 dollar (US$) is equivalent to 47.39 Philippine Pesos(Php) so 120 pesos is roughly 2.5 US$)

ohh yeah, i almost forgot. yup im proud to say that this is my first buffet experience. thats why i am so glad and my stomach is so empty when i seen the open table...

this trip realy made many first. thanx again pangga ko :* :"> :x

La.Pi.S # 63 : street FOOD

button6

Street Style Doughnuts

*lol* yes folks, its doughnuts street food style. this peddler has variants very and closely similar to big doughnut shops.it may not taste the same but trust me, on times like this, this is the best alternative to high-priced branded doughnuts.

La.Pi.S # 62 : Beans

button6

Taho

Taho comes from Soy Beans, thus this is my take to this week's theme.

according to a TV show - long time ago thus i forgot where and when - products like taho, tofu and tokwa comes from a single process but different stages of maturity that makes it different in textures. my suking mamang taho confirms it.

They grind soy beans and put in hot water to extract its milk (soy milk). they add water, soy milk and calcium (to make it firm). then they put the taho in pails for vending. the middle part is the tofu, its firmer than taho but softer than tokwa. the bottom part is the tokwa, thats where the term "latak ng taho ang tokwa" came from. Tofu has two common varieties : frim; and silken.

Im craving for towa't baboy everytime i finish a glass of Taho :D

Kitchen Lab # 02 : La.Pi.S # 59 : from roots to ends

button6

Tokwa con Togue
Bean Curd and Mung sprouts

I found this dish on Yummy Magazine. on the original recipe, they used Edamame beans and Edamame sprouts. Edamame is a Japanese term for Soybeans. Since Edamame can only be found on specialty shops and stores thus i opted to use mung bean sprouts as an alternative.

this dish is simple, jaz fry tokwa then set it aside, saute onion, garlic and mung bean sprouts. season w/ soy sauce, oyster sauce, and ground black pepper, simmer until tender, add a slury (corn starch dissolved in water) if the sauce is thin or runny. pour this on top of the tokwa and serve.

sorry, i forgot on what edition where i found this. and i cant even find the scanned photo of the original dish and its recipe thus i cant share it now.

La.Pi.S # 58 : WHIP eat

button6

Tapioca Salad

Everytime i crave for dessert. this one comes to my mind. its a simple dessert and easy to WHIP up when that sugar rush comes. All you need is to WHIP all-purpose cream, condensed milk. and mix in tapioca (sago). thats it :D pretty simple isnt it?

You can add one or many of the following depending to your wants and cravings: nata de coco (coconut gel cubes); Kaong (sugar palm); Gulaman (gelatin); fruits (fresh cubes or canned).

as for this photo, its just Tapioca and Nata de Coco. embellished with strawberry fan.
