Scenic Sunday # 111 : Vicente de Lara Park Grounds (5 of 5)

Tribute to the Slain Members of the Press
Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, Philippines

Traveling will never be complete with out checking out the public parks where locals converge. for the next 4 weeks, starting 01st of August 2010, ill be featuring the grounds of Vicente de Lara Park.

Vicente de Lara is the former governor of the province. This was park was formerly called Gen. Douglas MacArthur Park. People said that when Gen Douglas Mac Arthur left Corregidor Island (in the province of Cavite), he landed in Cagayan de Oro en-route to Australia.

Local folks go here for a game of Badminton or to jog or just to meet. Expos and trade fairs are also held here. This park as of this writing is still under renovation. that is why every time I pay a visit a new attraction amazes me.

This final scene I want to share to you made my heart weep. It is really sad to know that a person who once wrote the news will be written in the news. Each brass plates in the left side of the photo represents one slain member of the press. Written(engraved) on each plate are names, news agency and its location. My condolences and my tribute to those who once spread the reality of our society.

This fourth scene I want to share to you is my personal favorite. A friendly game of chess is always an attraction to this side of the park. Normally chess is played in a silent area to let each player have a full concentration of the game. but on this area, its normal to be silent then a big laugh of cheers and merriment will also be heard from time to time. and it seems no one is bothered to these occasional noise, maybe its part of the game.

The second scene I want to share to you is this photo, the this Salakot Arch.

Honestly, I don't know what do local folks call this feature. I just called it Salakot which is the Filipino term for a native hat. In some events, this arch is serves as a events' stage or VIP grandstand. on times that there's no events, people make use of it as a shade for meetings. every morning near to this arch is where people do their jogging, aerobic workouts or a game of badminton.

Scenic Sunday # 106 : Divisoria Monuments 4 of 4

Scenic Sunday

Magsaysay Monument
Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, Philippines

One famous landmark in Cagayan de Oro City is the place called "divisoria". Divisoria got its name, from what i heard and read, from the word 'divider'. that place became a divider when a huge fire razed the place. but now, that said divider is somewhat a big center island for the streets of T. Neri and R.Abejuela.

Divisoria is where people meet, to dine, to shop or just passing by to and from work or home. Every friday and saturday nights, the entire place becomes a huge market place, commonly called "divisoria night market". its has shoes, bags, apparel, food & drinks, and other merchandises.

appart from its people, commodities and sights, there is 7 unnoticeable landmarks that divisoria had. these are: an amphitheater - which is under renovation; a tourism office; a big gazebo called "Kiosko"- for events that needs a stage; and four (4) heroes monuments.

my entry will focus on these monuments which for me, makes Divisoria more scenic.

this is the monument for Ramon Magsaysay, the past President of the Philippines.
