Two Exciting Reasons to Visit Guam this April 2017

From sunny beaches and clear, cool waters to historical and cultural sites, not to mention duty-free shopping at bargain prices just to name a few, there’s really a ton of reasons why Guam should be on your list of must-visit paradises here on earth. On April 7, the Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the deliberate sinking of the German ship SMS Cormoran at Apra Harbor, Guam in 1917 during World War I. Meanwhile, Guam’s annual premier running event, the United Airlines Guam Marathon, will kick off its fifth year with the HåfaAdai Expo and Packet Pick Up event on the same day.

What made the scuttling of this armed merchant raider significant was that it marked the “first shot” in the war between the United States and Imperial Germany in WWI. The ship came to Guam in 1914 as it ran out of coal while avoiding enemies throughout the Pacific. Since the U.S. was not at war then, Guam’s military governor allowed the vessel to stay and its crew to come ashore and befriend the locals, but he refused to provide them the needed coal. In 1917, the U.S. finally entered WWI, and the island’s military governor ordered the Cormoran’s captain, Adalbert Zuckschwerdt, to surrender the ship. Instead of complying, the captain decided to scuttle the ship. When U.S. sailors saw this, they fired a warning shot across the Cormoran’s bow to stop its crew, but to no avail. The ship was sunk, and nine of its crewmembers perished.

For the next 26 years, the Cormoran lay undisturbed in its watery grave. Then on August 27, 1943, during WWII, a U.S. submarine torpedoed Japanese freighter Tokai Maru, which sank and came to rest perpendicular to the Cormoran. This incident gave Guam a unique gift, making it the only place in the world where you can find shipwrecks from two different World Wars lying side by side.

To celebrate the centennial of the Cormoran’s scuttling, a wreath-laying ceremony at sea and at the monument in the U.S. Naval Cemetery in Hagatña where the sailors who perished are buried will be held. Special dive packages are also offered, wherein divers and visitors can participate in dive tours to the historic wreck site. There will also be history lectures at T. Stell Newman Information Center.

UNITED AIRLINES GUAM MARATHON

The fifth edition of UGM that happens on April 9 from 3 to 11 a.m., is not just about running, but a host of pre- and post-race activities as well that can be enjoyed not just by the participants but also by the public. The HåfaAdai Expo to be held on April 7 from 12 noon to 6 p.m. (and continuing on April 8 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) serves as the mandatory participant packet pick up location and is open to the general public. Festivities will include a running clinic by 2000 Sydney Games Olympic gold medalist and UGM ambassador Naoko Takahashi, sponsor booths, live entertainment, cultural activities, food and beverage concessions, shopping for official UGM and running merchandise, and other only-on-Guam activities. Additionally, there’s the runners perks program that features a diverse set of shopping incentives and other discounts that all registered runners, visitors, and local residents can enjoy.

At the end of the race, an all-new BBQ Beach Party awaits participants and guests alike, taking place at Governor Joseph F. Flores Memorial Park (Ypao Beach), with the scenic view of Tumon Bay. Along with a live BBQ station, the party will also feature a live concert performance, beach games and entertainment, the traditional Tumon Bay post-race dip, beachfront photo opportunities, local food and beverage concessions, live cultural entertainment, and more!

Temporary Suspension of Flights to and from Surigao City Airport (SUG:RPMS)

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has restricted operations at the Surigao Airport in Surigao City, due to runway damage brought about by the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the area 10th of February 2017 at 10pm. Suspension is effective (today,) February 11 until March 10, 2017.

In line with this advice, Cebu Pacific flights to and from Surigao will be suspended on February 11, 2017 onwards.

Affected passengers may be accommodated via mounted Cebu-Butuan-Cebu flights or avail of any of the following options, without penalties:

* Rebook their flights for travel within 30 days from original departure date;
* Reroute their flights to alternate stations (Cebu or Bacolod) within 30 days from original departure date; or
* Opt for full refund or travel fund.

Cebu Pacific's CebGo will soon fly between Manila to/from Tablas and Masbate

Starting February 15, 2017, Cebu Pacific Air (CEB) wholly owned subsidiary, Cebgo, will launch daily flights between Manila and Masbate; and four times weekly (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) between Manila and Tablas using the newly-acquired ATR 72-600 aircraft.

The addition of these new routes will allow our passengers to easily visit these fast-rising areas in Luzon, both known for its white-sand beaches, waterfalls and diving spots.

Cebu Pacific Air joins world’s first pan-regional LCC alliance

Singapore, 16 May 2016 – The Philippines’ leading airline, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), together with seven other market champions in Asia Pacific, today announced the formation of the world’s largest low-cost carrier (LCC) alliance – the Value Alliance.

CEB (including wholly owned subsidiary Cebgo), Jeju Air, Nok Air, NokScoot, Scoot, Tigerair Singapore, Tigerair Australia and Vanilla Air – will provide greater value, connectivity and choice for travel throughout Southeast Asia, North Asia and Australia, as they bring their extensive networks together.

Customers will be able to view, select and book the best-available airfares on flights from any of the airlines in a single transaction, directly from each partner website, thanks to groundbreaking technology developed by Air Black Box (ABB). This means more destinations, more routing options and greater convenience for customers of each airline.

Cebu Pacific Accepted its 32nd Airbus A320 Aircraft

Last Saturday, September 26, 2015, The Cebu Pacific accepted delivery of its 32nd brand-new Airbus A320 aircraft which arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA)

The brand-new Airbus A320 is the airline’s thirteenth aircraft that comes equipped with Sharklets. Sharklets are 2.4 meter wingtip devices that enable airlines to reduce fuel burn by up to 4% on longer sectors.

Cebu Pacific Air Advisory on Manila Terminal Changes

Starting August 15, 2015, Cebu Pacific flights utilizing turbo-prop or ATR aircraft, such as those from Manila to Caticlan, Busuanga, Laoag and Naga, will operate out of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 4 (aka Manila Old Domestic Airport).

Meanwhile, all Cebgo (formerly Tigerair Philippines) flights will operate out of NAIA Terminal 3, beginning the same day. All Cebgo flights utilize jet or Airbus A320 aircraft.

This is in line with the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) advisory, dated May 28, 2015, to maximize runway space at NAIA. CEB fully supports this government effort to improve air traffic conditions in Manila.

Cebu Pacific Air orders 16 ATR-72-600s at the Paris Airshow

The Philippines’ leading airline, Cebu Pacific Air (PSE:CEB), ordered 16 ATR72 -600 from ATR, the European Turboprop aircraft manufacturer. At the Paris Air Show, Cebu Pacific and ATR announced that the order includes options to acquire an additional 10 ATR72-600, valuing the total aircraft order at US$673 million, based on current list prices. The transaction will see Cebu Pacific double its turboprop fleet size, subject to the execution of final purchase documentation.

The order is part of Cebu Pacific’s fleet renewal program. Cebu Pacific currently operates a fleet of eight ATR 72-500 aircraft, which will be retired as the new aircraft enter service. The entry into service of the ATR 72-600 will see Cebu Pacific with new generation aircraft to meet growing demand in the Philippines for inter-island services.

ATR aircraft enjoy a high reputation not only for versatility but also for their ability to operate on short runways. This will allow Cebu Pacific to expand its operations not only on main airports but also to several other airports around the country, enabling Cebu Pacific to continue to play a leading role in the development of regional transport, tourism, and local economy in the Philippines.

The ATR 72-600 ordered by Cebu Pacific will be equipped, for the first time, with the high density Armonia cabin, the widest cabin in the turboprop market. It will be equipped with 78 slim-line seats and wider overhead bins with 30% more stowage space. These new technological innovations further enhance space and comfort for passengers.

About 330 ATRs – including more than 100 ATR 72-600s – are currently operated by 55 airlines in the Asia-Pacific region, where for many years now, they have been seen as the reference regional aircraft. The ATR 72-600 has the lowest cost per seat mile in the 70 seat segment, with significantly lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to similar class aircraft.

On their new order from ATR, Lance Y. Gokongwei, President and CEO of Cebu Pacific states: "We have been operating ATR aircraft since 2008, and they have enabled us to bring safe, reliable, and affordable air transport to smaller cities and islands throughout the Philippines. This order is an affirmation of our commitment to extend the convenience of affordable air travel to even more communities. We are very pleased to be the launch customer of this new configuration of the ATR 72-600, as this will allow us to offer our customers more seats at even lower fares.”
