FoodBlast from the Past : @ Mana SuTuKil (2 of 2)

Grilled Squid

22 February 2009

We went Cebu for our CFC Singles for Christ conference. My GF has a brother in Cebu so, after the conference I called my sister to met us up. GF's sister also present for the conference so it will be a re-union for the siblings. when my sister arrived we went to GF's brother's house. We met her brother's family (wife and daughter) after awhile we went to Mana SuTuKil for our lunch.

I already featured in this blog my experience in Mana SuTuKil. I featured the place, and their signature dishes: Sinugba; Tula; and Kinilaw but i forgot to feature the two dishes that we also had.

I love squid and I shared that to GF, they ordered and when they asked me and my sister on what dish it will be cooked, I said Sinugba (grilled) and my sister said Calamari. so half went to the grill and half went to the frying pan.

after eating, we strolled to the Lapu-Lapu shrine and Magellan Monument which are both on the other side of the fence.

Background of the Entry:
I got my first digital (point and shoot) camera last September of the year 2007. I dont have a blog site yet but I do have a multiply site since January of 2006. My blogging started August of year 2008. In between those dates, I captured many photos of places, food, events and virtually any thing that my heart desires on that time. Blogging those photos was my primary reason why I captured them. Blogging on those times was kind-a difficult for me for I dont have the means. So im reviving my old food photos to make these entries.

FoodBlast from the Past : @ Casa Ilongga

Kinilaw

18 February 2009

It was my first time in Cebu! with me are my sister and my friend. Upon arrival Mactan Cebu Airport, we contracted a coupon taxi to bring us to our hotel, I thought it was clear to the driver where we are heading thus we find our self lost in Barangay Lahug. thus I reiterated to the driver that we must be in go to Colon st. after showing my map to him, we finaly came to our hotel. after the usual check-in process we now must find a food place since we havent had our lunch yet, it was already two in the afternoon. I asked the front desk crew how we can go to Robinsons Place, she said that its just a single jeepney ride, giving us the jeepney code (yes, every route in Cebu has a code as seen on top of the jeep and on its side)

when we arrived in Robinsons Place, we went to the food court and one by one we took our orders on different places. I ordered this kinilaw na tanigue which is my favorite visayan dish catered by Casa Ilongga. It also come with rice and soup. My sister ordered pork BBQ and my friend ordered rellenong alimasag; pork asado and lumpia. we all shared our orders thus we had a tasted of it. after our late lunch cum early dinner,we strolled a little in the mall then went to the grocery to have some supplies, water and food for the rest of our stay.

ABC Wed R5 : the letter "D"

D is for
Dried

The Philippines, being an archipelago, fishing is a major source of income. long time ago, when electricity and refrigeration (and freezing) is not yet available, fishing folks sort to dry fish and other seafood to preserve it. they cure it w/ salt (or saline) and dry it under the sun. drying seafood is also a way of food security during the rainy season when no sunshine and pure rains will visit us in weeks. in every coastal towns and cities in the Philippines, they have different ways of curing, drying depending on what specie.

On this photo, that is Taboan Market in Cebu City, Cebu and its the trading post for dried seafood like the most famous Danggit (rabbit fish); octopus; squid; swordfish; anchovies and a lot more species and it comes in all sizes and levels of salinity. going there is heaven for me since i really love Danggit. but a word of caution, when you visited this section of the market, the salty fishy smell will cling on you for hours. taking a bath and laundry will only lessen it. what a shame that i felt when i got back to the hotel. i immediately took a bath and changed clothes for we (me and my sister) will be going to Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental in a couple of hours. i sealed my clothes on a plastic bag so that other stuff on my luggage will not get its smell.

Have a Great Wednesday to all of us :D

when we went to Cebu City, we planned to join a low cost Pilgrimage Tour organized by our community. we when on different churches and places of Cebu City, its about 13 stops, that’s why we need to have our breakfast. its not an enjoyable trip on an empty stomach isn’t it?

La.Pi.S # 51 : RESTOrant

button6

Manna Sutukil Food House

i have nothing to rant about my restos so i will feature my most memorable resto to date.

Sutukil is a Visayan acronym for Sugba(grilled), Tula(stew) and Kilaw(cheviche).

at this resto, i had a great time with: my sister; my girlfriend; and her sibs; sister-in-law; and niece. Her brother suggested this resto for our lunch meeting and get together.

first, we made to chose from an enormous array of fresh seafood and marinated meats for BBQ then....

her brother told what kind of dishes we wanted for those ingredients. by the way, we chosen Tanigue for: Sinugba; Tinola and Kinilaw. a seaweed that goes with the Tinola. Squid for grilled and calamari.

after that we were made to choose which part of the resto we want to eat here in the 1st floor for an enclosed area or.....

the second floor as for that balcony and al fresco scene, over looking the sea and Lapu-Lapu Shrine. of course, we chosen the second floor for more spacious and more relaxing feel.

its Definitely a great day and a great lunch for me. i also had a great time w/ my Girlfriend's family. i enjoyed every moment of it.

after the feast, we strolled around the Lapu-Lapu Shrine.

thanx again pangga for this wonderful and momentous event of our life.

Food Trip # 05 : Puso

What's the sense of traveling places without sampling thier local specialties. Food that makes the place known for and the other way around. This is my Food Trip, where visiting a place is not the same nor complete without eating what do locals are proud of. I will make a blog entries regarding the food I tasted during my travels in this meme so do please visit every Friday and the Food Friday Meme.

Puso

Locals say that the "puso" was created so that the cooked rice will not spoil easily. the holes on each weaved coconut leaves act as an air vent.

The seller said that they weave coconut leaves to form a diamond shaped prism, fill it with rice(uncooked) then close the weave. place it on a pot to boil until cooked :D

@ Larsian Fuente

Larsian Fuente is the new place for those craving for grilled foods. They all have all kinds of it, from meats to seafood. They also serve(sell) rice, beer and softdrinks.

BIG WARNINGS:
1) since the place is heaven of all sort of grills, expect to be smoked. Oh yes! the smoke smell will cling to your dress and to your skin for hours even a best perfume is no match.
2) they dont have water for hand washing so they give out plastic bag(s) to cover your hand(s). The plates are covered with plastic bag too.
3) bring your own drinking water, you need lots of it =))

My featured menu for today:
Tinowa
Stew(ed)

in this dish, we chosen Tanigue & curly seaweed(i forgot to ask the name);stewed with leeks.

i admit, i really dont know what the real name for this dish. others say "tinola"; others say its "tinowa", others "tula". maybe its different on each province/town and its grammar. all i know is this is better than a hearty cream soup. i can say that this is one of my comfort food. when we arrived at the place, my pangga insisted on her brother to order the soup, in an instant, i already guessed that she is referring to this one so i said no more.
