Noong ako'y nasa kolehiyo na. Madalali lang ang kumain nag kung ano-ano. Palibhasa may baong pera.

When I was on college, its easy for me to eat anything my heart & my stomach desires because I have an allowance. In that school, food peddlers & kiosk are all around. I buy from street food retailers because its all I can afford & heavy on the stomach. But now, I cant eat these kind of foods, Its bad for our heart due to family history.

Lasang Pinoy Sundays # 11 : Breakfast

I made this breakfast so that I could use my new bread toaster which I won from a culinary magazine publication house as a prize. Its just a simple toast with strawberry jam & scrambled egg. I partner it with a mug of coffee w/c is not seen on the pix, sorry :)

But you know what, my favorite breakfast meal is ToSiLog (Philippine bacon, fried rice & sunny side-up egg). Unfortunately, fatty meals are not good for me/us so I can't eat that meal anymore, I'll just have to be contented for either breakfast cereals or bread and hot choco.

Have a happy & blessed Sunday :)

Litratong Pinoy # 21 : Mithi (Wish)

makapunta ng Cagayan de Oro
to go to Cagayan de Oro

newspaper advertisement re: flight fares

When the month of August comes, I always remember and wish to go to Cagayan de Oro City. I also wish to ride an airplane thus, 2 wishes will come true. And my third wish is to visit my love interest. It is the feast of Cagayan de Oro on August 26 to 28, its called the Kagay-an Festival.

I wished this since last year, but I think it won’t come true this year because I will use my savings to go to Cebu on February 19-24, 2009. I will also meet her there. I think I can go to Cagayan de Oro on April 2009, during her vacation at work. I hope that you’ll be with me in praying for this wish will come true.

Besides from visiting her, we will stroll the city. The last time we talk about this, we will go to: St. Agustin Cathedral; Macahambus Adventure Park where there is zipline, rappelling & hanging bridge skywalk; White River Rafting on Cayayan river; to her workplace, it’s a school were in she’s a teacher; her school in college, there is also a museum there; the Provincial Capitol, the City Hall; my much awaited to see – Divisioria weekend night market; lastly the Pineapple plantations of Del Monte Corp.

newspaper article re: Tourist spots in the Philippines

If I’m lucky enough, we can also go to Camiguin Island which is also near, about 3 hour trip from Cagayan de Oro. But of course, these are just all plans. I hope that the Lord may Will it.

Cagayan de Oro is the Capital city of the province of Misamis Oriental. Found on the Northern part of Mindanao, Philippines.

Paghuling Pananalita :

Salamat :)

Closing Remarks:

Sorry if this contains few pictures, I still don’t have a photo of the place. There’s a lot on the internet but I don’t dare to copy it here because its not appropriate to place it on a Blog, isn’t it? Don’t worry, if this wish came true, I Blog it immediately. Until then… Have a Great Thursday. Thanx!

Maligayang huweBEST sa inyo mga ka-LP

Litratong Pinoy # 20 : Liwaliw (stroll)

Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center

Quezon Avenue Entrance Gate

Common folks usualy stolls in the park. Its enjoyable yet cheap. One of the well-know parks here in Metro Manila is the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center which is located in Quezon City

This is where my parents and other relatives usualy stolled me. I strolled here too when I was still in college.

The last time i went here was last January 28. After we - me, my mother, and 2 sisters - strolled at the Lung Center Weekend Market, we decided to stroll here too.

Maligayang huweBEST sa inyo mga ka-LP

Thank you so much Litratong Pinoy for the very enjoyable meet-up. Because of our EB, I will now officially enter to the blogging world. I registered this blog spot months ago, unfortunately due to lack of interesting topic to blog upon, it went to an indefinite halt. Starting from this entry, i do hope and pray that I'll be a better blogger.

Kitchen Lab # 01 : Yummified Media Notche

Jan 1, 2008

Being the one who is pointed out to be the head cook for the media notche, as early as December 5, I’ve been scanning & re scanning the pages of my most favorite “yummy” magazine for what I can prepare, cook & serve. With more than 86 recipes per issue with 8 issues at hand reading it again & again is very pleasing but I have to admit its tiring. And this is my first list:

Main dish: Grilled Lamb chops
Yummy Magazine – July ’07 – page 36)
Pasta in creamy Clam Sauce & mushroom trio
(Yummy Magazine – April ’07 – Page 35)
Side dish: Mashed Potato, Coleslaw, Garlic Mushroom (Yummy Magazine – March ’07 – page 32)
Dessert: Mango Pearl Layers
(Yummy Magazine – Aug ’07 – page 86)

The next thing to deal with is that I don’t have a starter meal. Green Salad is the only thing I can thing about. Good thing after we (me & my sister jenn) done the grocery, I stopped by the magazine stand and fortunate to get my two lacking issues of yummy – May & June 07. While reading these two, I now had a solution to my salad as starter.

Starter: Strawberry & Arugula Salad(Yummy Magazine – May ’07 – page 26)

The next problem was how I can make these dishes fit my budget & the availability of some ingredients. The only solution I had in mind is to re-create these meals not only to solve the problem but to make the dishes show my personality, creativity & passion on food. Using the said meal plan as a template I now created the following menu.

Recipes:

Mixed Greens w/ Dried Mangoes in Italian Dressing

Toss Mixed Greens, chopped Dried Mangoes & Gourmet's Italian dressing in a serving platter. Serve Immediately

Pasta w/ Creamy Clam Sauce & Mushroom Trio

Sauté sliced mushroom trio (shiitake, straw & button) in a buttered pan until brown. Pour in a can of clam chowder, a can of cream of mushroom soup, salt & pepper, bring to boil, simmer for 5 min. add grated cheese, dried basil leaves & Italian seasoning, simmer for another 5min or until cheese melts.

Turbo Broiled Pork Chops

Mix ¼ cup canola oil, dried herbs (rosemary, tarragon, thyme, sage & Italian Seasoning), salt, pepper & lemon juice. Boil a slab of uncut pork chops/pork ribs in water w/ 1 pork broth cube for 30 min. drain & let cool. Rub oil mixture into meat and marinade for 30 min. broil the meat for 15 min at 200C for 15 min each side. Let it rest for 5 min before slicing to serving pieces.

  • Sidings: Coleslaw (left)
    • Mix blanched thinly sliced cabbage, grated carrots, mayonnaise, all-purpose cream, salt & pepper to taste.
  • Sidings: Mashed Potato (center)
    • Mash boiled potato in all-purpose cream, salt & pepper to taste.
  • Sidings: Garlic Mushroom Trio (right)
    • Sauté garlic in butter, until lightly brown, add sliced mushroom trio. Stir fry until golden brown.

Fruity Pearl Ice box

Whip all-purpose cream & condensed milk. Chill in the fridge. Layer the cream, finely chopped puto seko, cream and sliced fruits(strawberries & peaches) & sago. Do another layer, chill overnight.

A day in the Market – Salcedo Community Market

Dec. 22, 2007

Salcedo community market – or simply Salcedo market – is always featured in magazines, newspaper & even some episodes on TV. They always have a good thing or things to say about this small community market. Opens on Saturdays only, from 7am to 2pm in a small parking lot adjacent to a simple garden park. Now curiosity is eating me. So we – me & sibz & mom - decided to give it a visit as a simple family bonding tour last 22 of December 2007.

When we are finally there. Wow!!! It is really amazing, more amazingly that what is written or featured in the media. It’s a one-stop market of all hard to find - even seasonal - goodies delight, from seafood to delicacies, from vegetables & fruits to flowers, wow, virtually everything in one place.

They also have ready to cook delis & ready to eat meals. They also have an eating area for hungry folks, somewhat a food court. Really a yummified foodies heaven. Besides from food, you can easily met warm-smiled friendly people both merchants and buyers. Foreign guest or immigrants interact and mingle with us locals. Yes!! Food for the heart.

The only catch here is the items come with a hefty price. If you are on a very very tight budget, this place is not really for us. Fare alone for me is a big price tag.
BUT!!!!WAIT!!!!! as I said, it’s a one-stop market for hard to find items. So I admit, even if it is a bit pricey, it is still a good deal. Take a tour from stall to stall, who knows, the other stall is cheaper from the first one.

To get there, from EDSA, proceed to ayala ave. turn right to rufino st, right to leviste st. its the park with a lots of stalls or tent. The entrance is one on the tordesillias st and one in the corner of Toledo & leviste sts. As for me, since it’s a Saturday, I can un-board on ayala triangle/ayala stock exchange. Then I’ll walk from there to philamlife bldg. then turn left to sedeno st. then right to leviste st. until Toledo st. entrance.

A trip to this community market is definitely the best one. Seeing good food, eating good food. Seeing people, took a pic on kuya kim. Well what more can I ask for? Ah! I have two things in mind, “kelan kaya ako babalik dito?” “mas better kaya sa ibang markets like market-market & tiendesitas?”

Boarding MV Doulos

Dec. 21, 2007

I can’t recall when was the first time I heard of the name “M/V Doulos”. By that I time I was determined to pay her a visit. But going to manila pier is not a walk in a park. It is walking on thorns. The fear of getting hurt is the only excuse & the only reason for me to stay home.

Now, MV Doulos berthed again in manila last November 29 and she will stay there until the 26 of December. Then she will proceed to subic bay until the 16th of January 2008. My eagerness once again called me to give a visit. Meet her crew, buy some of her books on sale.

At last, we (me & sib jenn) visited her last December 21st. as expected, getting there is not an easy task. Trusting on my own navigational gut feelings. We walked from luneta park to pier 13 where she is berthed. Making a wrong turn made my “map in the mind” updated and seen a lot of unfamiliar places.

It was high noon when we reached south pier had lunch on a local canteen. Every step on her way was a step to excitement. At last we’ve seen her, camera shots were fired. Paid ten pesos for my entrance fee since my sib will be using a free pass coupon from the newspaper.

It is really amazing that a ship deck was turned into a bookstore. Complete with lights, fans, information desk, POS cashiers, and shopping baskets. Its price tags are on “units” and a unit is equivalent to a Philippine Peso. Hmm???, I wonder how much a unit cost in US dollars?!.

Scanning every shelf makes a lot of fun. Being a mug collector, I immediately grab one. I only want to have a cookbook and a souvenir item. The selections are not readily available in a local bookstore thus; even if the price is hefty it is still a steal, a win-win deal. Come to think of it, the books are rarely displayed in a local bookstore, that the crews are volunteers, that the money is spend on charitable cause. The only problem I had is my budget. Alas!!! I only got a two-in-one cookbook and a postcard.
