Scenic Sunday # 111 : Vicente de Lara Park Grounds (5 of 5)

Tribute to the Slain Members of the Press
Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, Philippines

Traveling will never be complete with out checking out the public parks where locals converge. for the next 4 weeks, starting 01st of August 2010, ill be featuring the grounds of Vicente de Lara Park.

Vicente de Lara is the former governor of the province. This was park was formerly called Gen. Douglas MacArthur Park. People said that when Gen Douglas Mac Arthur left Corregidor Island (in the province of Cavite), he landed in Cagayan de Oro en-route to Australia.

Local folks go here for a game of Badminton or to jog or just to meet. Expos and trade fairs are also held here. This park as of this writing is still under renovation. that is why every time I pay a visit a new attraction amazes me.

This final scene I want to share to you made my heart weep. It is really sad to know that a person who once wrote the news will be written in the news. Each brass plates in the left side of the photo represents one slain member of the press. Written(engraved) on each plate are names, news agency and its location. My condolences and my tribute to those who once spread the reality of our society.

Classic Jamon Sandwich (half size)

Classic ham, lettuce and mayo in wheat loaf bread . the price varies to what type of ham used and its size. the half size is using one - yes! one! - slice of loaf bread then cut into half. that makes the 1st half on top and the other in the bottom. the whole size is using two slices of bread - one on top, one at the bottom. the coffee is sold separately.

The most famous scene here in the Philippines is the coastal horizon. Our country is an archipelago of 7,100+ islands, coastal horizons is not that far. Be it a sunrise or sunset, viewers will always be captivated by it's majestic beauty.

For the next few weeks, I'll feature photos of world renowned sunset of Manila Bay. My location that time was in the view deck of Manila Ocean Park. Here's my last photo for the series buts its definitely not the final for ill be back again for more photos of this kind. I hope you enjoyed my photos.

This fourth scene I want to share to you is my personal favorite. A friendly game of chess is always an attraction to this side of the park. Normally chess is played in a silent area to let each player have a full concentration of the game. but on this area, its normal to be silent then a big laugh of cheers and merriment will also be heard from time to time. and it seems no one is bothered to these occasional noise, maybe its part of the game.

Spicy Shrimp

For the final entry for this restaurant - but not the last. i'll present this mouthwatering dish ordered by my Girlfriend's brother's friend.

background of this entry:

January 2010, My Girlfriend's sister and her fiance invited both of their families to have a get to know dinner in this restaurant. Luckily I am present on that day and I was also invited. At last, I said to myself, I can now go and dine in this very inviting restaurant that captured my interest from the day I first heard about it.

Sorry for the low quality photo, the function room is dimly lit from its little incandescent bulbs they use. I cannot also have a good angle in taking the photos. The food they ordered is far from me so I used the zoom which makes it (more) blurry.

Beef Stroganoff

For the 3rd dish. i'll present my Girlfriend's order.

i was so surprised that she exclaimed that its not delicious. out of curiosity, i asked her for me to have some, she did and she waited for my reaction. all i can say that time was "bakit ganun?!" then i asked her to mix every thing up because its not creamy that a stroganoff must have. the cream (the white sauce) is not mixed in the sauce, it was swirled in the middle, for plating i guess. after she finished mixing it all up, its still taste the same. in short, we are both not satisfied. my guess, the beef, the sauce and the cream should have been cooked all together so that the cream will bind its flavor to the beef and sauce.

Neptune Platter

For the 2nd entry, i'll present this crispy Seafood, ordered by yours truly.

It's really hard to decide on what to order specially if there are many to choose from and you like most of it. that's my dilemma when i ordered in this restaurant. so i focused myself in seafood section and come across to this meal.

It's a platter indeed with garden salad of lettuce, carrots and cucumbers w/ mayo based dressing (top bowl). a crispy cuts of shrimps, squid and tuna with dip - garlic ranch i guess - plus rice. i ordered bottomless lemonade so that i can fully enjoy my meal. i also ordered an extra rice, the viand is to much for one cup =))

The second scene I want to share to you is this photo, the this Salakot Arch.

Honestly, I don't know what do local folks call this feature. I just called it Salakot which is the Filipino term for a native hat. In some events, this arch is serves as a events' stage or VIP grandstand. on times that there's no events, people make use of it as a shade for meetings. every morning near to this arch is where people do their jogging, aerobic workouts or a game of badminton.
